Book a consultationWith two driving lessons per week and parallel theory classes. With a full-time job, more like 12-16 weeks. The bottleneck is usually the test date at TÜV.
Detailed process12 of those are legally mandatory (5 rural roads, 4 motorway, 3 night). The rest are practice lessons. Beginners with no prior experience typically need more like 30, returning drivers 15-20.
Category B lesson planYou can sign up 6 months before your 17th birthday. Until you turn 18, you only drive with a registered accompanying person. Studies show BF17 starters have 30 % fewer accidents in their first years.
More on BF17Since 2021 you're allowed to practise and take the test in an automatic without a lifelong restriction on your licence. Requirement: 10 manual lessons before the test. Highly recommended for 2026.
B197 explainedAll German driving licences must be exchanged for the EU card with an expiry date by 19 January 2033 at the latest. The deadlines are staggered by year of birth and year of issue.

About conversionFor the practical test, a 2-week waiting period is typical before you can retake it. We'll analyse with you what went wrong, plan 2-4 targeted practice lessons, then re-register with TÜV.
Test FAQTübingen is narrow, hilly, has lots of one-way streets, and students behind the wheel dodging beginners on e-bikes. That shapes our training.
The practical test typically runs via Mühlbachäcker, the B27 towards Reutlingen, Lustnau, and back via the city centre. We know the typical test route. That's part of your special drives.
Applications and the mandatory exchange go through the driving licence office. Online appointments need 3-6 weeks' lead time. On request, we'll submit applications for you, so you only need to go there once for the eye test.
Hill starts are mandatory practice here. The old town, with its combined cycle/pedestrian zones, demands extra caution. The B27 is your motorway practice. We also drive it during rush hour.
In October and April, many students sign up for the first time, which makes TÜV appointments scarcer. Recommendation: sign up before the start of the semester, so you're in the more favourable window.
