With Category A1 you can ride light motorcycles up to 125cc and 11 kW (max. 0.1 kW/kg). Perfect for the commute to school, your first experience on two wheels, or as a stepping stone to A2 / A.
A1 is significantly more expensive, but you ride real motorcycles up to 125cc and 11 kW (15 hp). AM is cheaper, but limited to 45 km/h, which gets frustrating in practice. If you're serious about riding two wheels, start with A1.
A1 stays valid, you keep both categories. With Category B you automatically get AM (moped/scooter) added as well. A1 is a separate entitlement and stays useful if you ever want to swap the car for a bike.
A certified helmet, motorcycle gloves, a motorcycle jacket with protectors, sturdy long trousers (ideally motorcycle jeans or trousers), and ankle-high boots. We lend you the helmet and gloves; you'll need the rest yourself by the time of the test at the latest.
