A2 is the most common entry-level motorcycle category. You can ride motorcycles up to 35 kW (47 hp) and a maximum of 0.2 kW/kg. This also includes throttled, more powerful machines, provided the restriction is TÜV-registered.

Frequently asked about Category A2

Yes, as long as the restriction to 35 kW and max. 0.2 kW/kg is TÜV-registered. Many manufacturers offer throttleable A2 versions from the factory. Important: the original motorcycle may have a maximum of 70 kW.

After 2 years on A2, you can upgrade to A without a theory test and with just 7 mandatory drives. If you'll actually ride a more powerful motorcycle afterwards, it's worth it. If you're sticking with a 600, A2 is enough.

It starts at the TÜV centre in Reutlingen. The test route typically runs along rural roads towards Mössingen or Pfullingen, with a motorway entry onto the B27, about 30 minutes total. Basic manoeuvres (slalom, braking, walking pace) come first.
